Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS is a drug-free, non-invasive, and personalized depression therapy.
Learn About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared treatment for depression and OCD. TMS is non-invasive, non-medication, and approved by most insurances.
How Does TMS Work?
TMS uses MRI technology to target specific brain areas associated with mood. By changing neuronal activity, TMS helps normalize brain function in people with depression and other conditions. TMS can promote brain flexibility by helping the brain form new connections, aiding recovery in underactive areas. It may also change the levels of brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, important for mood and motivation.
Is TMS Right For You?
You may be a candidate for TMS if you have:
Been diagnosed with major depression or OCD
Tried antidepressants without success
Received therapy within the last 5 years
Experienced symptoms or side effects that have interfered with your relationships, leisure activities, or career
How It Works
The TMS Experience
We will assess if you are a suitable candidate for TMS. Typically, an MRI will be used to map your brain for targeting treatment location. A standard course of treatment is 36 sessions. TMS is administered up to 5 days per week, and lasts 20 – 30 minutes each session. Each day, you will sit in a comfortable chair while treatment takes place. You can relax - or even watch TV! At the end of the session, you are immediately able to return to work, school, and normal activities.
Why TMS Is Different at Delve Psychiatry
At Delve, we use different TMS technologies to treat behavioral health conditions. One of our devices combines functional MRI (fMRI) with TMS to enhance the precision and efficacy. The fMRI image provides detailed maps of brain activity, enabling targeted and personalized TMS interventions.
Real Data, Real Results
The Delve Approach to TMS
At Delve Psychiatry, TMS is more than a treatment. It’s a pathway to restoring functional balance across your entire brain.
While many approaches focus on symptom management, we go beyond by using advanced imaging and neuroscience to guide personalized, network-based care that supports long-term brain health.
As one of the only psychiatry practices in the nation offering connectome-guided TMS, we’re uniquely equipped to deliver targeted, effective treatment for depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and more. (Anything other than the treatment of Depression and OCD is considered off-label.)
A Philosophy Rooted in Brain Health
At Delve, we believe that mental wellness is more than the absence of symptoms. It’s about helping your brain function as a cohesive, connected system.
That’s why our TMS treatments are designed not just to stimulate, but to synchronize. We focus on achieving neural synchronicity: optimizing alignment of brain circuits that underlie mood, cognition, and emotional resilience.
Connectome-Guided TMS: A New Frontier in Precision Psychiatry
This approach allows us to:
Personalize each TMS session based on your brain’s network architecture
Target the precise areas believed to be responsible for dysregulated mood and thought patterns
Restore healthy brain network function instead of chasing symptom relief alone
In other words, we treat the source—not just the symptoms.
We’re proud to be one of the only psychiatry practices in the U.S. offering connectome-guided TMS, a revolutionary, MRI-based method that maps each patient’s unique brain network, or connectome.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
TMS therapy, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and cognitive function. It is FDA cleared for major depression and OCD, and is often considered when traditional approaches like medication and psychotherapy have not provided enough relief.
-
TMS works by placing an electromagnetic coil near the scalp and delivering focused magnetic pulses to targeted brain regions. These pulses help influence neural activity in areas that may be underactive, with the goal of improving communication pathways related to mood, motivation, and emotional regulation. Delve also offers advanced systems that can combine functional MRI with TMS for more precise targeting.
-
At Delve Psychiatry, TMS therapy is primarily used for major depressive disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, especially when those conditions have not responded well to more conventional treatment. Because anxiety and trauma related symptoms can overlap with these diagnoses, TMS may also be explored as part of a broader treatment plan depending on the patient’s specific presentation and history.
-
A good candidate for TMS therapy is often someone who has been diagnosed with major depression or OCD and has not improved enough with psychotherapy, antidepressants, or other psychiatric medications. It may also be a strong option for people who have had difficulty tolerating medication side effects or who want to explore a nonmedication treatment path. At Delve, every patient begins with a thorough evaluation to determine whether TMS is appropriate.
-
During a TMS session, the patient sits comfortably in a specialized chair while a device delivers magnetic pulses to carefully selected areas of the brain. Patients remain fully awake throughout the process, and there is no anesthesia or recovery period required. Most people are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately after the session ends.
-
A typical TMS treatment course involves a series of sessions over several weeks. At Delve Psychiatry, many treatment plans include around 30 sessions over six weeks followed by a taper period, and each session generally lasts less than 30 minutes. The exact schedule can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.
-
TMS is generally well tolerated and does not have the same systemic side effects that can occur with psychiatric medications. Some people may notice mild scalp discomfort, muscle twitching, or a temporary headache during treatment, but many appreciate that TMS does not typically cause problems like weight gain, fatigue, or sexual dysfunction.
-
Yes, TMS therapy is often covered by insurance when certain criteria are met. Delve Psychiatry accepts a wide range of health insurance plans, including Medicare, and works with patients to help verify coverage and navigate the approval process. This can make advanced mental health treatment more accessible for those exploring alternatives beyond standard therapy and medication.
-
Delve Psychiatry stands out because of its combination of advanced technology, personalized treatment planning, and compassionate care. Our practice uses highly detailed imaging and functional mapping to improve precision, and one of our innovative systems combines functional MRI with TMS to create more targeted interventions. Patients also benefit from being cared for by an experienced team led by Dr. John Reitano, with a strong emphasis on education, transparency, and long term progress.
-
Yes, TMS therapy can be part of a broader treatment plan. At Delve Psychiatry, it is often used alongside psychotherapy, medication management, and supportive lifestyle strategies when appropriate. This integrated approach helps ensure that care is not limited to one intervention alone, but instead reflects the full scope of what may support the patient’s recovery.
